What Are Crystal Chandeliers?

Let’s not over complicate the definition of a crystal chandelier. It is simply any chandelier that has crystal components.

Whether that be crystals hanging down from it, crystals built into the the shade around the bulb, or some other unique combination.

Chandeliers with crystals are known for the dimension they add because of the way the light changes as it shines through them. The effect creates an unmistakable beauty and ambience to any room it has the pleasure of lighting.

Types Of Crystal Chandeliers

There are really endless options for types of crystal chandeliers! From some large enough to hang two stories or more in a grand entryway, to a mini chandelier the perfect size for lighting up a reading nook.

The styles of chandeliers range just as much as the sizes do. There are sleek, modern options with unique shaped crystals, classic cut crystals that drip from every arm of a traditional chandelier, and quirky bohemian chandeliers with a wide array of colors, shapes and textures.

Where To Use Crystal Chandeliers

In my opinion, there is no bad place to use a crystal chandelier! Here are just a few of the common places where they are used in a home:

  • Entryway/Foyer - The light in your entryway or foyer is a big part of the initial impressions that many people will have in your home. Setting the tone for the space with some extra sparkle from a crystal chandelier can be a great way to provide a stunning welcome to guests as they arrive.

  • Dining Room - In a formal space like a dining room, crystal chandeliers are right at home. Any style from traditional to modern can fit into this space, depending on your preference. This is probably the most common location for this type of chandelier to be found as it will never feel out of place and will set the room apart from others around it.

  • Kitchen Island or Peninsula - Crystal chandeliers are a great choice to hang over a kitchen island or peninsula to add an updated feel to the space instantly. With the amount of use a typical kitchen gets, these may be the most seen and appreciated lights in your home, so you might as well go for something you love!

  • Powder Room or Bathroom - Whether used in the center of the ceiling, over the vanity countertop, or even over a soaking tub, crystal chandeliers are a popular choice for bathrooms throughout the house. A small or mini chandelier can have an especially big impact in a powder room as it will put off the right amount of light and create a more dressed up space for guests when they are visiting.

Choosing The Right Size Crystal Chandeliers For Your Home

Finding the right size crystal chandelier for your space is easy! It takes just a few measurements, and you’ll be ready to go.

First, you will want to decide on the location of your crystal chandelier. Whether that be in a room, or over something, like a bathtub.

what size chandelier do I need for my dining room, how to calculate size of chandelier needed for room

Crystal Chandelier Sizing For A Room

Once you have selected the location, you will want to measure the length and the width of the space.

Then you need to add the length (in feet), to the width (in feet) and that number is the ideal size chandelier in inches for that space.

Here is an example of a dining room - let’s say the dining room is 14 feet long by 12 feet wide. You would then add 14 + 12, and the number you get is 26.

26” is then the ideal size chandelier for that room. Of course, you can definitely fudge those numbers up or down depending on your size preference for the space, but it is a good general rule of thumb.

Crystal Chandelier Sizing For A Kitchen Island Or Peninsula

When it comes to choosing the right size chandeliers for a kitchen island, you will want to use the same idea as above, but measure the length and width of just the countertop over which the chandelier will hang.

You’ll add the length of the countertop (in feet) to the width of the countertop (in feet) and the number you get will be the ideal size for the lights in inches.

For example, a kitchen island that is 8 feet long by 3 feet wide would have an ideal size of 12” for each of the chandeliers that were to hang above it.

Crystal Chandelier Sizing For Over A Bathtub

If you’re planning to put the chandelier over a bathtub, I recommend changing up the formula a little bit.

Usually, I start by taking the length of the tub and dividing it by 3. The number that I get is then the maximum size chandelier I would hang over the tub.

For example, if the tub is 60” long, then I would divide 60 by 3, and get 20.

20” is then the maximum size crystal chandelier I would hang over that space.

My Favorite Crystal Chandeliers:
