Why Add Small Chandeliers To A Bathroom?
Small chandeliers in bathrooms are not something you see everyday. If you’re wanting to add something extra special to your bathroom, a small chandelier can be a great choice.
When thinking about different types of lighting in your bathroom, a chandelier would most likely be considered accent lighting, essentially it is more decorative than functional.
Rarely would you ever just use a chandelier in a full bathroom where people would be showering or getting ready for the day, as it likely wouldn’t have enough functional lighting to be practical. In the case of a powder bath, a small chandelier could work well on it’s own, depending on the fixture and the design of the space.
I see a chandelier in a bathroom as a type of luxury item, as it is something that would be done as a custom feature. Can you think of any standard builder grade home that has one? I know I can’t! That is because it takes extra effort, time and money to add the wiring, the fixture and the switching for that additional light. It has to be worth it to the owner to spend that money for the increased ambiance a small chandelier can add to the room.
If you’re wanting to add a special touch to your own custom bathroom, there are numerous ways small chandeliers can be used, depending on the space you have available. It is an extra step than can make a world of difference!
Small Chandeliers For The Bathroom And Safety Considerations
Before we get too far into this, we need to cover some basic safety considerations to help you choose the right chandelier from the beginning.
Light fixtures have ratings, these include dry location, damp location, or wet location. It is important to understand the difference between these ratings.
Read more about these ratings here: The Difference Between Dry, Wet, and Damp Locations
Depending on your bathroom, the ventilation available, and where you intend to put your chandelier, you may need to choose a light fixture with a damp or wet locating rating. Basically, if there’s a chance water could get splashed on or around the fixture, then choosing one of those ratings will be a smart choice.
The reason to be aware of these ratings is for safety. Think about it: Light fixtures are turned on with electricity, and water is a conductor for electricity. That means that if the fixtures comes in contact with the water it can cause electrocution and fire. Not something you want to worry about in your bathroom, no matter how beautiful the fixture may be.
You will also want to refer to national and local code, or ask your licensed electrician, about any limitations on locations and/or heights of your chandelier to ensure you choose the right one for your space.
How To Use Small Chandeliers In Your Bathroom
There are so many ways you can incorporate a small chandelier into your bathroom.
Consider where you have space for the chandelier, and what you are hoping to accent.
Some great ways to use a small chandelier is tucked in an empty corner, I especially like this for powder rooms and it can be a great opportunity to use a beautiful shadow casting light as the two walls will reflect the pattern.
You could also have a small chandelier in a corner over a vanity, especially if you have a single sink and a longer vanity countertop.
I have liked using small chandeliers over a double sink bathroom vanity, specifically between the two sinks to add some sparkle and interest.
A popular choice is often over a bathtub, as there is an empty space above that can be filled perfectly with a small chandelier.
Another practical way is to install the chandelier in the center of the bathroom ceiling to maximize the visibility from all angles.
Coordinating Existing Finishes With A Small Chandelier In Your Bathroom
Coordinating metal finishes in a space can often come down to personal preference. I have noticed, when choosing a small chandelier for your bathroom, it can sometimes be hard to find both the style AND the finish that you love in one fixture. If that is the case for you, I don’t want you to worry too much about things being matchy-matchy.
I generally believe in following a rule of thumb that you should try to avoid mixing more than 2 finishes in one space. That means if your faucets are brushed nickel and your vanity light fixture is oil rubbed bronze, I would encourage you to choose a small chandelier in one of those two finishes. That is a simple way to keep things feeling cohesive design-wise, without it having to all be identical.
The Best Size Small Chandeliers For Your Bathroom
After you have nailed down the location for your chandelier, considered the dry/damp/wet rating necessary, and identified your chosen metal finishes you have one thing left to do: figure out the best size!
Choosing the right size chandelier will come down to where you plan to use the chandelier and the height of the ceiling in that location.
Here are some examples of how to choose the best size chandelier for your space:
Chandelier Centered On The Ceiling -
(Length of the room in feet) + (width of the room in feet) = number of inches wide the chandelier should be.
Measure the height of your ceiling in feet. The chandelier should not hang lower than 7 feet to ensure it is not a hazard.
Chandelier Over Bathroom Vanity Countertop -
Figure out the measures of the depth of vanity countertop and the width of empty space on the countertop over which you would like the chandelier to hang. Those measurements are the maximum depth and width of your chandelier. Depending on the space, I would plan a few inches smaller to ensure the chandelier did not hit the wall or stick out too far.
Height of the chandelier over an empty space, could be anywhere from 30-36” above the countertop, depending on your preference. That means if you have 8’ tall ceilings, and a 36” tall vanity, the total length your chandelier could hang for the height would be 24-30”.
Chandelier Over A Bathtub -
I recommend taking the length of your bathtub and dividing it by 3. That number is the largest size I would hang directly above the tub. For instance, my bathtub is 66” long. Dividing by 3 I get 22”, which means I would aim to get a fixture no wider than that to hang above my tub.
In areas with lower ceilings you should consider how low you really want the fixture to hang. It is important that it meets safety code, so sometimes that may mean choosing a semi-flush or flush mount fixture instead to allow the appropriate amount of space.
Here Are Some Of My Favorite Small Chandeliers For A Bathroom:
Small Chandeliers For Over A Bathtub
I absolutely adore a chandelier over a bathtub! It adds glamour and a pop of sparkle to the space. Who doesn’t want to lay in the tub and look up at a beautiful fixture? Of course, it must be said that you will have to check you local code, because if you can stand in the tub and touch the light, that would be a serious safety concern. So be smart friends! Talk to a good electrician, check that everything is up to code, and make sure it will work in your space.
Small Chandeliers For Over A Bathroom Vanity
A small chandelier can be a great way to add a little sparkle to your bathroom without overwhelming the space. Using a small chandelier over a sink, in a corner, or between sinks on a double vanity can be the perfect way to add light and style! The reflection in a mirror can also be an awesome way to get double the bang for your buck. Depending on how it is placed, it can work in any bathroom, from powder room to master bathroom oasis!
Small Chandeliers For A Bathroom Ceiling
Even a small bathroom can sparkle by simply replacing the overhead light (you might already have) with a new small chandelier. If the overhead light is your own light in the space, it is important to pay attention to the number of bulbs in the small chandelier to ensure you will have enough for how you use that bathroom. Small chandeliers in the center of the bathroom can also cast beautiful shadows on the surrounding ceiling and walls which can elevate the space in a completely unique way.
Installing Small Chandeliers In Your Bathroom
If you’re simply replacing one light for another, and you feel pretty confident in your abilities, adding a small chandelier to your bathroom will probably be an easy task.
If you have never tackled electrical projects before and/or you need to put new wiring into a box to hang your chandelier, we say hire a professional. Electrical work can be dangerous, so it is better to hire someone who knows what they are doing than to risk damage to your home or yourself.
