Step 1 - Identify Your Favorite Kitchen Design Style
Are you attracted to traditional design, modern lines, or a cozy rustic cottage?

Knowing the overall aesthetic you’re working toward will help you stay focused and be able to describe your style to different professionals you may work with along the way.
Believe me, if you do some research in this area and it will pay off exponentially throughout your remodeling project. Plus, it can be pretty fun!
Step 2 - Pick a Focal Point For Your Custom Kitchen Design
You may have fallen in love with the idea of a bold patterned backsplash, a big island with metallic quartz countertop, an industrial chimney style hood or funky glass pendant lights.
Finding one item you love can serve for inspiration for an entire room.
Whatever it may be, make sure you are focused on the one thing that you love enough to make the rest of the room accentuate and even mimic that piece.
In my opinion, the focal point you select is really what creates a custom kitchen design because it is a representation of your individual style.
Step 3 - Find Inspiration For Your Kitchen Remodel
Find a family of shapes and complementary colors for the room by using your focal point as inspiration.
For instance, when designing the kitchen a recent project I fell in love with a classic white arabesque shape backsplash tile.
I decided to use that as my inspiration for the room.
To keep the space feeling cohesive, I decided on a neutral color palate of gray and white.
I matched a gray and white quartz countertop with white cabinets on the perimeter and a gray color for the cabinets of the island.
The leg on the island even has a more curvy shape to tie into the shape of the tile backsplash.
I chose a simple pendant light with a similar rounded shape to the arabesque tile.
As you can see, these items complete the room and allow the focal point to feel integrated throughout the design of space.
Similarly, when you use your focal point as inspiration and build from there, you can begin creating a custom kitchen design that feels intentional and the elements shine without competing with one another.
Step 4 - Focus On A Cohesive Kitchen Design
When creating a custom kitchen design, there really aren’t any firm rules. It is your space, so it should be a reflection of you!
That said, I do have some general tips I offer to clients to help them as they think about their kitchen design.
I follow a rule of thumb that within any room the fixtures attached to the floor should match and the fixtures attached to the ceiling should match.
What I mean is if you have satin nickel finish hardware on your cabinets, you should also have a satin nickel finish for your faucet.
Similarly, if you have black finish on your island pendant lights then the chandelier over your dining room table should have a black finish as well.
Another recommendation for mixing metals in a kitchen is to stick with two - will make it easiest to keep a cohesive feeling.
In my opinion, having consistent finishes helps the room feel as if it was intentionally designed and not just pieced together.
Step 5 - Ask For Help Creating Your Custom Kitchen Design
There’s no doubt about it, remodeling is expensive and a big investment in your home.
If you are unsure about your choices, pick someone who you know has great style and get a second opinion.
This could be asking the opinion of your spouse, a friend, or a family member.
Obviously, it could also mean asking your contractor or hiring a designer. As experienced professionals, they can offer unique insight into how you can create a custom kitchen design within your budget to give you the most bang for your buck.
Having a second pair of eyes can help affirm a decision or steer you in a better direction.
I would suggest though, not to seek too many opinions, as that can have the opposite effect and actually hinder the decision making process.
At the end of the day, you need to go with your gut. It is your investment in your home and you need to love it.
Conclusion
Creating a custom kitchen design starts with the process of understanding your own style. Taking the time to find things you love and allowing them to inspire your space will help you create a kitchen that is as unique as you. I guarantee following these steps will help you create a gorgeous custom kitchen design you will be proud to pin on Pinterest!
